Advent, Christmas, and the Run‐Up to the Neujahrskonzert

Advent transforms Vienna's church life. Choral concerts, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Handel's Messiah, and the Austrian carol tradition all appear repeatedly in programs at Stephansdom, Karlskirche, Peterskirche, and other central churches. Around them, the major halls run festive symphonic and choral programs, while the Mozart and chamber circuit at venues such as Mozarthaus Vienna and Palais Auersperg continues at its usual daily rhythm. By the final week, Strauss and operetta gala concerts cluster around the run-up to the famous New Year's Day broadcast — the single most internationally watched classical event of the year.

Vienna in the Cold

Daytime temperatures hover around 4 °C and fall close to 0 °C at night, with rain or snow on about nine days. Snow is far from guaranteed, but the cold is real and the days are short — sunset by mid-afternoon. Concert evenings pair particularly well with the Christmas markets around the Rathaus, the Belvedere, and the smaller squares of the Innere Stadt. Dress for winter: church interiors stay chilly even when packed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of Christmas concerts are available in Vienna in December?

A full spectrum: Advent oratorios and choral works in historic churches, festive orchestral programs at the major halls, and a particularly dense Strauss-and-operetta circuit toward year's end. Mozart programs continue without pause throughout.

How early should I book December concerts in Vienna?

As early as possible. Christmas concerts at the most popular churches and the gala Strauss programs around December 30 and 31 sell out earliest. By mid-November, central availability has already tightened noticeably, so booking through Classictic.com well ahead is the best strategy.

Are there New Year's Eve concerts in Vienna?

Yes — Silvester is a major concert night across the city. Strauss programs, gala operetta evenings, and special chamber concerts are widely available. The famous Neujahrskonzert at the Wiener Musikverein on January 1 is, however, allocated years in advance and is not a typical bookable event for most visitors.
