Lenten Repertoire and the End of Winter

Berlin's church concert tradition has deep roots, and Lent is when that tradition becomes most visible. Bach's Passions, Brahms's Requiem, and a wide range of choral repertoire associated with the season appear in venues such as Berliner Dom and Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. Outside the religious calendar, March is when the secular houses programme their most demanding works — long Mahler symphonies, late Bruckner, and large-scale opera productions all find their natural slot. Easter sometimes falls in the final week of March, in which case sacred programming intensifies sharply during the last seven days.
