Philharmonie Berlin
Herbert-von-Karajan-Str. 1
10785 Berlin
Berlin’s golden Philharmonie, designed by Hans Scharoun, opened in October 1963 with a concert by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. At first quite controversial, the stunning building just a stone’s throw from Potsdamer Platz has since become the model for numerous concert halls around the world.
About 270 concerts take place every year in the larger of the Philharmonie’s two halls. 2440 eager listeners at a time can attend concerts of the famed Berlin Philharmonic here – arguably the finest symphony orchestra in the world – as well as the performances of guest orchestras, chamber groups, and soloists. The Chamber Music Hall, with a capacity of 1180, hosts smaller orchestral formations, chamber ensembles, and solo recitals. The design of both halls is based on the concept of 'music as the center of attention', with the concert podium in the center of the hall and the audience seated in irregular terraced blocks surrounding the stage on all sides. With remarkable acoustics and a decidedly sophisticated yet playful air, the Philharmonie building is at the artistic heart of the central Kulturforum and, indeed, of the city itself.
The Philharmonie Berlin is situated in the center of the city.
