Tosca: Teatro Comunale di Bologna

About the Event

Puccini's opera, Tosca, evokes not divine love, but rather earthly, carnal passion. The protagonist, Mario Cavaradossi, burns with political fervor, yet in his dying moments, he dreams of the sweet kisses and languid caresses of Tosca, igniting even more lustful desires in Scarpia. Tragically, all characters meet their demise: Tosca kills Scarpia for his refusal, Cavaradossi is shot despite false promises of salvation, and Tosca ultimately commits suicide, mirroring the fate of the fugitive Angelotti. Sardou's drama, La Tosca, greatly appealed to Verdi, who would have set it to music himself if he were younger. After considering other possibilities, Ricordi proposed it to Puccini, who was already enamored with the story. This was the right choice, as the diabolical theme of Scarpia immediately dominates the drama. The music conveys a continuous crescendo of dramatic tension, capturing every gesture and glance. There is only one pause in action for the prayer, 'Vissi d'arte.'
