Tomatito, brillance and serenity

About the Event

José Fernández Torres, known as 'Tomatito,' was born into a musical family that included his father, grandfather, and uncle, who was the legendary flamenco guitarist Niño Miguel. Growing up in this environment, it was clear that Tomatito would continue the family legacy. As he ventured beyond his neighborhood of Pescaderia in Almería, he joined the wave of innovation in flamenco guitar that had been set in motion by a star figure who had transformed the genre.

It is widely known that Tomatito was influenced by and admired Paco de Lucía. For 18 years, he accompanied Cameron de la Isla, with whom Paco had formed a legendary duo. In 1989, Tomatito joined this artistic alliance, bringing his revolutionary spirit to the group. However, it was ten years prior to this that Tomatito made history as one of the two flamenco guitarists, along with Raimundo Amador, in the groundbreaking recording of 'La leyenda del tiempo,' which marked the emergence of 'new flamenco.'

Since then, José Fernández Torres has continued to evolve as an artist. He has drawn inspiration from various influences, allowing them to permeate his artistry and contribute to his unique style. With his own brilliant touch, Tomatito has become a global musician, sharing the stage with renowned artists such as Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Julio Iglesias, and his musical partner on the piano, Michel Camilo. Through his exploration of Latin flamenco, Tomatito has embarked on marvelous musical adventures.

Having achieved six Grammy awards and contributing to numerous soundtracks, Tomatito has surpassed his reputation as just an accompanist of Camarón de la Isla. Today, he is a versatile musician who has taken on ambitious projects such as the Concierto de Aranjuez.

As he continues on his musical journey, Tomatito remains committed to authenticity and growth. When he is not touring, he can be found at his Almería farmhouse, tending to fruit trees and raising livestock. Just as discreet and genuine as ever, Tomatito quietly carries out a revolution with his guitar. His music flourishes amidst diverse worlds and accents, embodying complexities, clarity, introspection, and unexpected bursts of exuberance. Passion, brilliance, and serenity define Tomatito.
