About the Event

Submerge yourself in the apocalyptic world of Alban Berg's first opera. Written between the two World Wars, the Austrian composer's bleak view of humanity and rich compositional heritage combine to devastating effect.

Based on Georg Büch's unfinished play of the same name, Berg explores the causes of seemingly-irrational behavior in a world scarred by conflict and marked by poverty, societal judgement, and an almost gleeful sadism towards the suffering of others.

New York's Metropolitan Opera assembles a suitably star-studded cast for this Twentieth Century classic. Peter Mattei makes a much-anticipated debut in the title role, and Elza van der Heever is the wayward Marie.
