Sunday Concerts at Conway Hall: Dante Quartet & Brian Thorsett

About the Event

Established in 1995, the Dante Quartet is renowned for its inventive programming and passionate performances. The group selected their name to symbolize a grand journey, and their artistic excellence has been recognized with the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music and various international accolades for their recordings.

Commencing their concert with Beethoven's Op.135, his final completed work, the Quartet pays tribute to the composer's legacy, which premiered a year after his passing. The remaining portion of the evening centers on British music, starting with Ian Venables' "Invite to Eternity," inspired by the poems of John Clare, a poet from Northamptonshire. To conclude the first half, the Quartet presents a medley of songs by Gloucester composer Ivor Gurney. The recital reaches its crescendo with Elgar's String Quartet, composed in 1918 during a highly productive period that also witnessed the creation of the Violin Sonata and the Piano Quintet.
