When it opened in 1862, the Théâtre du Châtelet was the largest Parisian theater of its kind. Inaugurated as Théâtre impérial du Châtelet in the presence of Empress Eugénie, it became home to a wide variety of performances, including orchestral music, opera, ballet, and operettas.
