Semyon Bychkov: Little Russia at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

About the Event

See the sights of Russia from the comfort of your concert seat! Semyon Bychkov conducts works that evoke the many colors and cultures of Russia and its surrounds, by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rachmaninov.

Tchaikovsky's 'Little Russian' Symphony, joyful and vivid, firmly established the composer as a successor to the nationalistic, and immensely influential group known as 'The Five', among whose number Mussorgsky featured prominently. The evocative prelude to the elder composer's opera 'Khovanshchina' depicts a Muscovite dawn in music. Rachmaninov's choral setting of Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Bells' incorporates the unmistakable sounds of the Orthodox Church to complete the musical portrait.
