Santtu conducts Elgar’s Enigma Variations
London, Southbank Centre — Royal Festival Hall
About the Event
Experience a highly‐anticipated concert featuring classical music by Edward Elgar, Dmitriyevich Shostakovich, and Franz Liszt at London's esteemed Southbank Centre. The Philharmonia Orchestra's 2023/24 season closes with Elgar's well‐loved tribute to friendship. Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, famously performed by Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, and Rowlf the Dog, will kick off the season finale with a lively touch.
Shostakovich's intense Cello Concerto No. 1 takes center stage in the program, showcasing the talents of the entire orchestra, including the principal horn and celesta. Sol Gabetta's previous interpretation of this concerto received high praise for its technical prowess and emotional depth. The evening culminates with Elgar's Enigma Variations, a musical ode to his closest companions, marking the highlight of the season. From the gentle elegance of the first variation dedicated to his wife Alice, to the powerful 'Nimrod', this work solidified Elgar's status as a national treasure.
