Rotterdam Philharmonic at the Concertgebouw: Brahms' Symphony No. 2

About the Event

Indulge in an evening of pastoral pleasures. Brahms' Second Symphony is often compared to Beethoven's Sixth for its bucolic cheer, but is distinctly a Romantic, rather than Classical, work.

The young Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare conducts Rotterdam's Philharmonic, delaying the Brahms briefly for the overture from Wagner's Tannhäuser — an amusing piece of programming, as the 1877 premiere of the Second Symphony was postponed by the Vienna Philharmonic's pressing need to learn Das Rheingold!
