Romeo et Juliette: Paris Opera Ballet

About the Event

With "Romeo and Juliette", Rudolf Nureyev comes to grips with one of Prokofiev’s masterpieces and translates its spirit and passion into a ballet worthy of the Shakespearean drama.

Rich in imagery, closely following the play’s structure and the development of its characters, the score was composed shortly after the composer’s return to the then Soviet Union. Rudolf Nureyev's version offers a true fresco of Renaissance colours. Through the movements of the crowd he captures the atmosphere of a bustling city where cruelty and death are omnipresent. His cinematographic‐like approach foretells the fatal outcome towards which hurtle the children sacrificed to the hate and rivalries of two families – the Capulets and Montaigus.

The result is a production of rare emotion and theatrical power at the Bastille Opera in Paris.
