About the Event

Experience the great choir and orchestra concert in Berlin! The Requiem by W. A. Mozart has been one of the most popular works of church music for more than 200 years. The event shines with a breathtaking richness of sound — the combination of concert hall, choir and orchestra gives the performance a unique expressiveness. The Ensemble Polisono under the direction of conductor Volker Hedtfeld and the Karl Forster Choir are experienced musicians on stage. The Requiem in D minor from 1791 is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last composition. Although only about two thirds of it was actually written by Mozart, it is one of his most popular and highly regarded works. Mozart died while composing it. Joseph Eybler and Franz Xaver Süßmayr, pupils of Mozart, completed the Requiem on behalf of Constanze Mozart, the composer's widow. The unusual circumstances of the commission and the timing of Mozart's early death have also given rise to a wealth of myths.

Founded in summer 2019 by Volker Hedtfeld, the ensemble brings together selected Berlin soloists to create a unique polyphony. The Ensemble Polisono Berlin was born out of the desire to bring the multi‐layered, pulsating, breathing, vibrant Berlin to life: dialogical, diverse, unconventional, courageous, lively, constantly renewing itself. The Ensemble Polisono Berlin is committed to the contemporary performance of historical music, but also to the discovery and promotion of what is yet to be written. The Karl Forster Choir Berlin was founded by singers from the choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral and named after the cathedral's choirmaster. The shaping of timbre and the pursuit of precision are the essential characteristics of the choir's work, which have made it a distinctive choir on the Berlin choral scene. Under the artistic direction of Volker Hedtfeld, the choir always succeeds in igniting the spark between choir and audience, making every concert a special listening experience.

Philharmonie Berlin

The Philharmonie is a concert hall opened in 1963 in West Berlin. It is considered the musical heart of the German capital, as well as the new urban centre after the fall of the infamous Berlin Wall. Its distinctive bright yellow exterior and unusual tent-like shape quickly made it a city landmark. The surprising design and architecture were initially viewed negatively by many, but the Philharmonie is now considered a model for concert halls worldwide. The architect, Hans Scharoun, aimed to design a concert hall in which the focal point - the musicians on the concert platform - is equally visible from every seat, an aim that gave rise to the hall's unusual shape. Since its inauguration, the Berliner Philharmonie has hosted numerous concerts, often featuring acclaimed soloists and conductors.
