Mozart & Bach: Apollon Musagète Quartet & Nils Mönkemeyer at L'auditori de Barcelona
About the Event
A very young Apollon Musagète Quartet debuted in Barcelona during L’Auditori’s Chamber Music season on 3 March 2011, with a demanding repertoire comprising pieces by Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin and Szymanowski. Seven years later, and now with more than ten years’ experience, Apollon Musagète returns to L’Auditori as one of the most prestigious and dynamic young quartets, presenting the second instalment of the complete String Quintets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, kicked off last season with the Modigliani Quartet. Accompanied by the young and multi‐award winning viola player Nils Mönkemeyer, the quartet will perform two of Mozart’s quintets, both major works in the chamber music repertoire. Included is the tragic Quintet in C minor that Mozart composed whilst in the midst of major financial hardships and in which he expresses all his disquiet in several opening measures that are full of drama and the final Quintet, catalogued as K.614 and written in the year of his death, with a sublime Finale where the principal theme conceals, within its lightness, the seed that Mozart would turn into an intense and conflicting fugue. Mönkemeyer will complete the programme with a performance of the Suite for Solo Cello, no. 1 by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the major landmarks in the repertoire for strings.
