Carlo Gesualdo, prince of Venosa, is famous for having murdered the lover of his wife … But his musical posterity is no less sulphurous because his music harbors harmonic daring unparalleled in history, breathtaking for a musician of the late sixteenth century. It is notably the Fifth Book of Madrigals, where chromaticism and modulations reach absolute heights. The Soloists of Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe are obviously up to the challenge.
