Lalande: Tenebrae and Misere at Versailles

About the Event

Take a peaceful moment in the Chapel Royal to appreciate the evocative mystery of Michel de Lalande's famous Lenten works in the space for which they were written. Perhaps the most influential composer of sacred music at the court of Louis XIV, and foreshadower of Bach and Handel, de Lalande was director of music at the Chapel Royal of Versailles from 1714 until his death.

Unusually for sacred music of the baroque, these compositions are scored for female soprano. Sophie Karthäuser joins the Ensemble Correspondances and Sebastian Daucé for this musical homecoming.
