About the Event

Don't miss Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata at the Arena of Verona in a production by Franco Zeffirelli.

The legendary director Franco Zeffirelli stages lights and shadows of the heroine Violetta Valéry.

Two long-cherished loves that finally come together: La Traviata and the Arena of Verona. La Traviata is certainly one of Zeffirelli's most staged operas in his long career as a director, stage and costume designer. In 1958 he staged the work in Dallas with Maria Callas and, as a young aspiring director, measured himself against his artistic role model Visconti. His close relations with Verona are also well known, but especially with the Arena, in which he has created unforgettable opera productions of immense vastness - and in this year's opera season finally brings the eagerly awaited Traviata to the stage. This production really becomes the climax of his ongoing, expert interpretation of the text, which has accompanied the artist throughout his life.
In other words, a new Traviata that at the same time becomes a chronicle of a long chain of ideas, images, nuances of colour and suggestions that have settled in the eyes and hearts of opera fans from all over the world, as if it were an encyclopedia of the stylistic ideas of Zeffirelli around the beloved subject. This Traviata in the Arena could thus be described as the very last summary of a Wagnerian leitmotif that was eternally suspended and will now be completed in June 2019.
Franco Zeffirelli is an expert in dealing with the arena's difficult and tricky stage, whose traps and pitfalls he knows very well, with its immense space and the huge masses of performers that move on it, but he also knows how to make the most of the possibilities offered by this prestigious and impressive space.
