La Serva Padrona at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM)

About the Event

La Serva Padrona, an opera by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, will be presented in the intimate setting of the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona.

The maid Serpina, which in Italian means 'little snake', takes care of the house of her boss Uberto, a rich and evil bachelor. When he announces his intention to marry, Serpina assures that she will become Uberto's wife and the absolute owner of the house. First, he shows Uberto that he can no longer do without her then he pretends he is going to marry her and introduces her to her supposed boyfriend (who is nothing more than the mute servant Vespone disguised as a soldier. Finally, Serpina gives her boss an ultimatum: either she pays him 400 dowrymen or he marries her, and Uberto chooses marriage, thus making the maid the patroness.
