About the Event

Ensemble Hermes showcases polyphony from the Leiden Choir Books, a collection of musical works from the mid‐16th century composed by renowned names like Clemens non Papa, Nicolaes Gombert, Jean Mouton, and other notable figures. These precious musical treasures were once compiled and preserved by the College of Seventh Period Masters for the Pieterskerk in Leiden.

The focus of Ensemble Hermes lies in the authentic performance of 16th‐century polyphony, including contemporary music that is closely connected to this style. Comprised of both seasoned amateurs and music students and professionals, the project ensemble strives to recreate the essence of this historical music. During their performances, the singers gather around a specially designed and crafted large music stand, which serves as the centerpiece for their musical expression. Whenever possible, the ensemble uses copies of the original manuscripts, demonstrating their dedication to maintaining the integrity of the compositions. In order to achieve this, all singers have mastered the intricacies of mensural notation commonly found in these manuscripts.
