Edward II: Deutsche Oper Berlin

About the Event

Witness contemporary music theater by Swiss composer Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Christoph Loy stages the newly commissioned work about the tragic figure of Edward II, King of England.

Edward II didn't choose wisely when he befriended Piers de Gaveston, the son of a butcher. While the King presents his former playfellow with power and fiefdoms, the aristocracy plots against the King's favorite and the King himself. Gaveston is murdered, Edward overthrown and brutally killed.

Based on a libretto by Thomas Jonigk, Scartazzini's focus is Edward's role as outsider, also addressing the larger issue of societal views of homosexuality.

Sung in German, with surtitles in German and English.
