Palais im Großen Garten
Dresden, Germany
Commissioned by the Saxon Elector John George III the pompous palace was built by Johann Georg Starcke from 1676 to 1683. It is not only the first Baroque building of Saxony but it is also said to be one of the earliest Baroque buildings in the German‐speaking area. The palace was modelled on Italian loggias and pavilions but originally only designed as festival palace. The palace served as a summer retreat and venue for pompous feasts of the courtly society. The baroque building that is situated in the centre of the Große Garten was destroyed at the bombing in February 1945. After renovations the palace provides an atmospheric ambience for chamber music concerts.
