Combining art and pop culture is typically American, but no 20th century composer did so as effectively as Leonard Bernstein, whose symphonies and choral works possess the same zest and flair as his songs and musicals.

Contrast the popular swinging musical, 'West Side Story', with the earnest sensitivity of the 'Jeremiah Symphony', in which Bernstein explores mourning, compassion, and hope. Also on the program is the world premiere of a work by Rijnvos, commissioned by the Concertgebouw Orchestra in connection with the theme East Side West Side.
