The Volksoper Wien is Vienna's largest theater for opera, musicals, and dance. Along with 18th, 19th and 20th‐century operas, the Volksoper offers more than one hundred evenings of Viennese operetta each year, as well as classical and contemporary dance. Nowhere can one find more pristine and impressive performances of operetta that is uniquely the Viennese form of musical entertainment.

At the outset, the Volksoper Wien was neither a state‐run theater nor an opera house. It opened in 1898 as the 'Kaiser's Jubilee Civic Theater' and was initially run as a conventional stage for drama. In 1903, opera and comic singspiel were incorporated into the repertoire, and Vienna's Civic Theatre gradually metamorphosed into the present‐day Volksoper Wien.
