Concerts in Vienna in January 2027

Few cities greet the new year with as much music as Vienna. Concerts in Vienna in January 2027 unfold against a city still glowing from the New Year's Concert tradition that the Wiener Musikverein famously broadcasts to dozens of countries on January 1. From that opening note onward, the Austrian capital settles into one of the richest classical months of its calendar — and into the early weeks of its legendary ball season.

A Capital That Begins the Year With an Orchestra

Vienna is the only city in the world where the new year is essentially inaugurated by a Strauss waltz. That cultural reflex shapes the entire month. Orchestras, choirs, and chamber ensembles return from the Christmas break with crisp programming, and Fasching — the Viennese ball season — begins in earnest after Epiphany. Beyond the grand halls, smaller venues such as Ehrbar Saal and the historic Sala Terrena at Mozarthaus Vienna run intimate Mozart and chamber programs that suit the quieter post-holiday mood.

Cold Days, Warm Halls

Daytime temperatures hover around 4 °C and slip to roughly -1 °C after dark, with rain or wet snow on about nine days. A proper winter coat is essential — Viennese churches in particular hold the cold, and the walk through the Innere Stadt to a venue is genuinely wintry. Concert halls are well heated, and the contrast between icy streets and a warm, gilded auditorium is part of what makes January concerts feel special.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there classical concerts in Vienna in January?

Yes, abundantly. January is one of Vienna's strongest concert months. The Strauss and Mozart tradition runs at full strength, with daily performances of orchestral, chamber, and Mozart-focused programs across the city.

Should I book early for January concerts in Vienna?

For the first week — including the days around the New Year's Concert and the early ball events — book as far ahead as possible. From mid-January onward, availability typically eases, and tickets for evening concerts tend to be easier to secure than they are in spring or summer.

What should I wear to a Vienna concert in January?

Smart casual is fine for most concerts. Vienna's audiences lean slightly more formal than in many capitals, especially for evening performances at the major halls, so a jacket is rarely out of place. Bring warm outerwear for the walk back through the cold.
