Transfigured Nights: Orchestre de Chambre de Paris
Paris, Théâtre du Châtelet — Main Hall
About the Event
Haydn, Mozart, Schoenberg: three great names from the Austrian musical tradition. This program, led by Izabelė Jankauskaitė, seeks to challenge the definitions commonly associated with them. For example, Symphony No. 49, known as “La Passione,” breaks with Haydn’s sparkling image its tumultuous atmosphere is rooted in the pre‐Romantic “Sturm und Drang” (“Storm and Passion”) movement. Conversely, Mozart’s final Piano Concerto (No. 27) stands apart from his earlier works due to its serenity. Aimi Kobayashi’s crystalline playing highlights its tonal unity and intimate character. *Verklärte Nacht*, meanwhile, is one of the first scores Schoenberg claimed as his own. Composed at the very beginning of his career, it reveals a musician still fascinated by the Romantic impulses and complex harmonies of the late 19th century. In this 1943 version, the composer revisits his string orchestration.
