Bach, Haydn, Mozart: Théâtre du Châtelet
Paris, Théâtre du Châtelet — Main Hall
About the Event
Organist, harpsichordist, musicologist, collector… and conductor: Ton Koopman is a man of many hats, driven by immense curiosity and rigour. The artist, who recently celebrated his eightieth birthday, has devoted his entire life to the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For his reunion with the musicians of the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, he once again takes Bach as his starting point, this time with Suite No. 3, whose magnificent ‘Air sur la corde de sol’ is one of the most popular pieces in the history of music. This is followed by two symphonic monuments of the late eighteenth century: Mozart's solar “Jupiter”, the crowning glory of his orchestral output, and Haydn's Symphony No. 98. Written a year after Mozart's death, the latter is sometimes called the ‘Requiem for Mozart’ because of its allusions to Mozart's music (particularly the “Jupiter”) in the ‘Adagio’.
