Dresden Opera
Enjoy an opera performance in Dresden, the capital city of the German state of Saxony. The Saxon State Opera originates from the opera company of the Kings of Saxony and was founded as Opernhaus am Taschenberg in 1667. The Opernhaus am Zwinger opened in 1719 and presented opera performances until 1756. The first opera house at the location of today's Semperoper was built by the architect Gottfried Semper and opened in 1841, but was destroyed during a devastating fire in 1869. The second Semperoper, completed in 1878, was completely destroyed during the bombing of Dresden during the second world war. After eight years of reconstruction the Semperoper reopened in 1985. Since then, it offers an unique experience and continues Dresden’s long opera tradition.
