Semperoper
Dresden, Germany
One of just a few opera houses to bear the name of its' architect, Dresden's exquisite Semperoper is the third iteration of Gottfried Semper's grand theatre. Fire, and the ravages of war, have taken their toll, but the city of Dresden has ensured that the neo‐Renaissance building has risen from the ashes repeatedly, as a prized jewel in the city's sparkling architectural crown.
The Semperoper has long played a central role in German opera, premiering numerous works including the majority of Richard Strauss' operas, and several of Richard Wagner's earliest successes. The list of conductors and singers associated with the house reads like a 'Who's Who' of the musical world of the last two centuries, and the incumbent chief conductor, Christian Thielemann, continues this tradition. The resident orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, is one of the world's most respected and admired ensembles, and the theater often features guest artists of international renown in its season.
The imposing facade and elegant interior of the Semperoper, and the musical and theatrical excellence it stands for creates the opportunity for the perfect operatic evening in grand style — a taste of the old world, with all the technological benefits of the new.
