Sarah Willis & The Sarahbanda: »Cuban Christmas«
Berlin, Philharmonie Berlin — Grosser Saal
About the Event
As the daughter of a foreign correspondent and a dance critic, Sarah Willis grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow, and Surrey, England. At age 14, she discovered the French horn at school—an instrument that would shape her life. In 1991, at age 23, she became the first musician from the West to join the Staatskapelle Berlin. And in 2001, Willis became the first female brass player in the history of the Berlin Philharmonic, where she continues to perform today. The horn player and avid salsa dancer has developed a very special love for Cuba. The “Sarahbanda” emerged from the sensational success of her “Mozart y Mambo” project—featuring some of Cuba’s most talented musicians and, of course, her French horn. “Cuban Christmas” combines Christmas classics as well as works by Bach and Tchaikovsky with a rousing Cuban groove in new arrangements.
