About the Event

A surprising number of well‐known composers chose the viola as their favorite instrument: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Dvořák, and Hindemith, to name but a few. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created the prototype of a new genre by adding a second viola to the string quartet. His quintets are “string quartets in widescreen format,” as musicologist Nicole Schwindt puts it, combining orchestral opulence with the finest compositional work.

His “G minor Quintet, K. 516” is just as much a classic of the repertoire as Antonín Dvořák's “American,” which was written during his time in New York and exudes a flair of Native American folklore. Alexander von Zemlinsky's “Two Movements for String Quintet,” on the other hand, is rarely heard in concert halls: an early masterpiece, composed while he was still a student and clothed in the tonal garb of his role model and patron Johannes Brahms.
