About the Event

György Kurtág, the master of musical miniatures, gave the Mandelring Quartet lasting inspiration during an impressive encounter in 1992. Minimalist means, concise gestures, and precise lines are the hallmarks of Kurtág's music. Some of the “Twelve Micro‐Etudes,” which he dedicated to the cellist and composer Mihály András, last less than half a minute: “Reflections of an entire world in a drop of water,” as a poetic description puts it. The Six Moments Musicaux from 2005 are also sparkling character sketches, in which Kurtág pays homage to colleagues from Messiaen to Janáček.

Their playful approach may be seen as a reflection of Joseph Haydn's original Opus 33, which is considered the birth of the classical string quartet. Johannes Brahms, in turn, refers to his Viennese role models with his quartet in B flat major. This is evident in its clear structure as well as its cheerful character. And Haydn would certainly have enjoyed the echoes of Hungarian folklore.
