About the Event

British countertenor Alexander Chance is one of the rising stars in his field and captivates his audience with his extraordinary musicality. He has already appeared several times as a member of the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis in concerts with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, winning rave reviews for his crystal‐clear voice and flawless intonation. Now he makes his debut in our subscription series with a solo program.
For this program, he has chosen two cantatas by Antonio Vivaldi that could not be more different. The first half of the concert features the sacred cantata “Nisi Dominus,” which Vivaldi set to music with a particularly devotional character. The second half takes on a spirited Italian flair with the secular cantata “Cessate, omai cessate,” in which Vivaldi pulls out all the dramatic stops.
Not only will Alexander Chance shine in this concert program, but so will the strings of the FBO. With instrumental works by Arcangelo Corelli, Pietro Locatelli, and Lorenzo Gaetano Zavatieri, the violins in particular will make their instruments sing. Molto italiano!

Orchestra: Freiburger Barockorchester

Freiburger Barockorchester (Freiburg Baroque Orchestra) is an orchestra originally founded 'to enliven the world of Baroque music with new sounds.' The orchestra, based in Freiburg, Germany now also performs works by later composers such as Beethoven, Schubert and Weber as well as contemporary music. They play small group chamber music as well as symphonies for large orchestras.

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra gave its first concert in 1987 and began touring abroad with a performance in Amsterdam in 1989 and came to America first in 1995. Today, half of the orchestra's concerts are performed abroad. The musicians chose Gottfried von der Goltz and Petra Müllejans from among their own members as musical directors. (Both von der Goltz and Müllejans are violinists.) The orchestra performs one‐quarter of its concerts under guest conductors, such as Ivor Bolton, René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe or Trevor Pinnock.

Countertenor: Alexander Chance
