Christmas with Original Bolschoi Don Kosaken
Berlin, St. Marienkirche Berlin — Main Hall
About the Event
During the Christmas season, the popular Bolshoi Don Cossacks male choir brings a piece of Eastern European musical history to Berlin. The trained opera soloists come from a wide variety of countries and have been promoting international understanding through their songs for decades.
The core of their repertoire consists of sacred songs, Cossack, Russian, and Ukrainian folk songs. From the softest pianissimo to the loudest forte, the artists not only sing their chorales with precision, but also convey their emotions with great sensitivity. Petja Houdjakov has been conducting the choir for 40 years and travels around the world with the musicians. At Christmas time, the Don Cossacks' program is enriched with festive songs. In addition to songs such as “Abendglocke,” “Wolga‐Wolga,” and “Roter Safran,” traditional Christmas melodies are also performed. With a little luck, the audience will also be treated to an opera aria or two. The singers are accompanied by the balalaika, a typical Russian plucked string instrument, and the “Aleksandra” harmonica.
