About the Event
Sir Simon Rattle was enthusiastic from the outset: “The founding of this orchestra is a deeply necessary idea.” Founded in 2015, the Chineke! Orchestra has set itself the goal of promoting cultural diversity in classical music. The name of the ensemble is derived from the Nigerian Igbo language and means “God, the creator of the world and of good.” ‘Chineke’ is also exclaimed when something amazing happens and is equivalent to our expression “Wow!”
It is the first professional orchestra in Europe to consist predominantly of musicians from ethnically diverse backgrounds and to include underrepresented composers in its repertoire alongside standard works of classical music.

| Piano: | Isata Kanneh‐Mason The British pianist is one of the most sought‐after young classical musicians in the world today. An ECHO Rising Star in 2021‐22, she received the coveted Leonard Bernstein Award and an Opus Klassik award for Best Young Artist. In 2022‐23, Isata Kanneh‐Mason was named Artist in Residence with London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, making her solo debut at the BBC Proms in that season to rave reviews. A dynamic and intelligent musician known for her eclectic and inspired programming, Kanneh‐Mason's recital and concerto calendar encompasses the world's great concert halls and orchestras. Her chamber music engagements, often with younger brother, cellist Sheku Kanneh‐Mason, regularly sell out venues across the globe. |
