Campus Project: Eastern Europe

About the Event

In this highly‐anticipated concert, hear the mellifluous sounds of classical music by Beethoven and Podgayskaya at Berlin's treasured and world‐renowned Pierre Boulez Saal.

Since its foundation in 2001, the Campus Project of the Beethovenfest Bonn and Deutsche Welle has created a space for international encounters, for exchange and for making music together. This year's edition, originally planned with the participation of German and emigrated Belarusian musicians, also includes participants from Ukraine in view of current political developments. At the centre of the programme is Beethoven's Third Symphony with its heroic, revolutionary gesture. Its four movements, performed in various chamber music arrangements, are grouped around songs of resistance, departure and hope, interpreted by singers from the participating countries, as well as film sequences captured by the Belarusian conductor and festival director Vitali Alekseenok in the places where the displaced people fled. In addition, a new work by the Belarusian composer Olga Podgayskaya will be heard.

Pierre Boulez Saal

The Pierre Boulez Hall is the hall of the Barenboim‐Said Academy. Designed by Frank O. Geary, the hall opened in March 2017 in Berlin, Germany. The hall was named in tribute to French conductor and composer Pierre Boulez, a name suggested by the Argentinian‐Israeli pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. Despite being essentially a chamber venue, the structure has a cuboid shape that can accommodate medium‐sized orchestras, and up to 682 visitors. Architect and musicians alike seek to offer a 360 degree perspective on music, combining styles, cultures and viewpoints in the space.
