Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini at Florence's remarkable Teatro Aurora.
Count Almaviva has fallen in love with Rosina, Dr Bartolo's ward, and comes to serenade her. He pretends to be the poor student 'Lindoro' so that she will not be influenced by his title. Figaro, formerly the Count's servant and now a hairdresser in Seville, explains that he can bring Almaviva to the house, disguised as a soldier seeking shelter.
Rosina is determined to marry her suitor Lindoro. Bartolo tells Rosina's music teacher Don Basilio of his suspicions that Count Almaviva is in town and in love with Rosina. Basilio suggests that they spread malicious rumours about the Count. The Count arrives in the disguise of his soldier, only to find that Dr Bartolo has been exempted from military accommodation.
Count Almaviva enters Bartolo's house again, this time disguised as Don Alonso, a music teacher. He says that Basilio is ill and has sent him to give Rosina's music lessons in his place.
When Figaro and Almaviva arrive to flee with Rosina, Bartolo is too late and, having no other choice, he blesses the marriage and everyone wishes the couple love and eternal fidelity.
Gioachino Rossini
Gioachino Rossini was an Italian composer of the 19th century. He made his debut at the age of 18 and soon became one the most popular opera composer in history. His best known operas are The Barber of Seville Il barbiere di Siviglia, The Italian Girl in Algiers L'italiana in Algeri, and Cinderella La Cenerentola. In general, his style can be defined as song‐like melodic which earned him the nickname of 'the Italian Mozart”. Later on he became famous for his exciting buildup of orchestral sound over a repeated phrase, which is now known as a 'Rossini crescendo”.
