Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Ljadow: Mues, Kitajenko & Konzerthausorchester

About the Event

Russian history will come alive in this concert feauturing Dimitri Kitajenko and the Konzerthausorchester. Works by Shostakovich, Tchaikowsky, and Ljadow are featured on the program.

Framed by the folk‐inspired symphonic poems by Anatoly Ljadow and Tchaikovsky's "Italian Carpriccio" are two vastly contrasting works, both written during the political upheaval during the late 1930s in Russia. The menacing and restless mood that is pervasive in Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6 reflects the composer's fear of a totalitarian regime — while the colorful and romantic harp concerto of Russian composer Reinhold Gliere doesn't reflect the political turmoil of its time.
