La ciudad de las mentiras: Teatro Real in Madrid

About the Event

Elena Mendoza's La ciudad de las mentiras (City of Lies), with libretto by Matthias Rebstock, brings to opera four stories by Uruguayan writer Juan Carlos Onetti that intertwine, creating a polyphony of places, characters and situations.

Much of the work of Onetti is set in the imaginary city of Santa María, a metaphor for social hypocrisy, despair and the isolation of the individual. Characters try to survive by building an existential lie: a parallel reality reached through madness, dreams or fiction.

La ciudad de las mentiras features four women who cling until death to their existential lies, at times absurd and not without humour, because ultimately they have much more dignity, much more grandeur, than so‐called reality.
