Janine Jansen: Barcelona Symphony Orchestra

About the Event

Internationally acclaimed violinist Janine Jansen and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jakub Hrusa, will perform works by Britten, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky at the Auditori de Barcelona.

The Symphony No. 6 in B minor, 'Pathetique' is the last of Tchaikovsky's symphonies. The subtitle does not refer us to a tragic or funeral universe, but rather to a high‐voltage emotional and existential suffering. Apart from being an existential treatise on fate, as were the Fourth and Fifth, it is a tribute to the Russian folklore that forms the composer's musical roots.

The Sinfonia da Requiem by Benjamin Britten is an early work by the British composer, who wrote it when he was just 26. However, it shows one of his aesthetic and existential trends: concern for war and conflict as limiting human uniqueness. Conductors like Koussevitsky and Barbirolli quickly adopted it because of its great musical worth and expressive intensity.

Conflict and the struggle for creative freedom also mark the work of Prokofiev. Written in 1935 and premiered by the Symphony Orchestra of Madrid, his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 is one of the most accessible and virtuosic works of the composer. Janine Jansen has been one of the instrumentalists who has strived the most to reclaim the Russian composer's work, and is an unbeatable representative of his repertoire.
