Finnish National Opera: Boris Godunov

About the Event

The Finnish National Opera presents Mussorgsky's opera "Boris Godunov" this season, with Matti Salminen in the title role.

Boris Godunov, seemingly secure as the Tsar of Russia, is plagued by ghosts from the past. Did he have the rightful heir to the throne killed? Who is Dimitri, invading Russia with the support of Poland? Modest Mussorgsky presents a powerful image of the Russian people during a time of turmoil.

Boris Godunov is a profound study of the unresolvable conflict between ruler and people and the loneliness of the monarch. Mussorgsky's rugged, appealing music paints a picture of the Russian psyche. The title role in Boris Godunov is one of the greatest challenges for a bass singer. Matti Salminen taking the role of the tormented Tsar is an unforgettable experience in the making.
