Asked about the title of his work Mystery of the Moment, Dutilleux responded that, without having written a single specifically religious piece, a composer would still have a 'sense of the sacred'. He gave the example of his only string quartet, Ainsi la nuit (Thus the Night).

The sacred mystery to which the composer referred is not an explicit one. It is found in the sonorities, the murmurs, the resonance of timbres; these are aspects that the listener notices immediately in any work of Dutilleux.

The second half of the program contains both mystery and great power: the First Symphony of Brahms.
