Hailed as one of the greatest comedic musical works of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten’s must‐see opera Albert Herring returns to the stage of the illustrious Vienna Volksoper for a new season.

Set in a small town in rural England, Britten’s Albert Herring sees a group of local dignitaries concerned about a decline in morals reintroduce an old custom: an outstandingly virtuous maiden is crowned May Queen. No young women fulfilling the criteria, the role is given to Albert Herring, the local greengrocer’s son. After the ceremony it becomes clear that his record is less a matter of virtue than it is of lack of opportunity…
