About 'Theater an der Wien'

Since the Theater an der Wien was reopened as the city of Vienna’s new opera house in January 2006, the theatre has established itself both nationally and internationally as a centre of baroque opera and modern, contemporary musical theatre. The theatre’s modern, accessible approach to music theatre, as demonstrated by the works performed and the overall artistic concept, is further underlined by the building itself, its architecture, and the vibrancy of its location. The surroundings and materials, the intimate atmosphere and perfect acoustics in the historical theatre prepare the senses to experience beauty.

As one of the oldest and most beautiful theaters in Vienna, the Theater an der Wien experienced a series of premieres of major stage plays and legendary stage appearances by many great artists. The premiere of Beethoven's Fidelio was held in the Theater an der Wien in 1805. In 1874, the premiere of Strauss' "Fledermaus" staged the beginning of the "golden age of Viennese operetta".
