The "Mozart Ensemble Wien" performs in the house of W. A. Mozart (Wiener Mozarthaus) reviving the tradition of the viennese classical period, as in the time of Mozart. The repertoire includes well-known compositions and string quartets by the four famous masters of chamber music. Of course primarily featuring the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, compositions by Franz Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert are to be heard as well. The "Mozart Ensemble Wien" consist of four well known musicians of the Vienna Chamber Music scene, who also perform as soloists. Tours and concerts have brought them to all the countries of Europe as well as to Japan and South America, where they have played their quartet repertoire. By performing in Austria and abroad, the "Mozart Ensemble Wien" has established itself in the viennese concert culture and has become an "insider tip" for visitors from all over the world.
The concerts in Mozart House take place at the monastery of the "German Teotonic Order", where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived and worked for Archbishop Colloredo in the year 1781. Although one hears, while visiting Vienna, that Mozart "lived" in this house, he actually only officially resided there for six weeks in the year 1781 from March 16th. until May 2nd. Nevertheless, he wrote his opera "The Marriage of Figaro" here and Mozart appreciated the wonderful acoustics and the incomparable atmosphere of the "Sala Terrena". The hall "Sala Terrena" is the oldest concert hall in Vienna, where Mozart himself performed many concerts.
It is decorated with beautiful frescos in the style of the late Venetian Renaissance and therefore is an ideal setting which offers the perfect scenery for performances of Viennese classical chamber music of the 18th century. The Sala Terrena, with its beautiful vaulted ceiling, is situated on the ground floor next to the church and the sacristy. Just as the church is a fine example of gothic revival, the Sala Terrena is a baroque jewel that was beautifully restored in its' recent renovation. There is not much space in the little hall and the event is focused mainly on visitors to VIenna - but you will remember it for a long, long time; having attended a concert in Mozart's House!
