About the event
Finlandia is a stirring and moving tribute by Sibelius to his homeland, written at a time of foreign domination and in support of a free press. Similarly nationalistic is Dvoøák's Eighth Symphony, an outgoing work of vigour and beauty that explores the song and dance, while suggesting the flora and fauna, of Bohemia. In between comes Mendelssohn's evergreen Violin Concerto, a fund of emotion and melody that culminates with a sparkling finale.
