Young Euro Classic: Orchestra Giovanile Italiana

About the Event

In this highly‐anticipated concert, hear the mellifluous sounds of classical music by Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Gliere, Glanert and Matesic at Berlin's treasured and world‐renowned Konzerthaus.

The Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, Italy's national youth orchestra — OGI for short — can look back on almost 40 years of tradition, and many well‐known compatriots from Riccardo Muti to Giuseppe Sinopoli and Gianandrea Nosedani have worked with the young musicians. After a long hiatus, the Italians are finally returning to the Young Euro Classic — with a programme that offers many different colours. Swiss‐born Massimiliano Matesic has integrated Klezmer music into one of his 2004 symphonic pictures Kiev‐born and German‐born Russian Reinhold Glière wrote his resonant Concert Waltz op. 80 in 1950. The first movement concludes with Stravinsky's 'Suite of Fireflies', a brilliant orchestral work that transports us to the enchanting fairytale world of Russia. After the intermission, a trip to the USA follows: the first of Detlev Glanert's three American preludes is short but extremely powerful, while Sergei Rachmaninoff's symphonic Dances, in which the exiled composer summed up his life in a moving musical way, is full of melancholy. A worthy incentive for OGI's young people!
