About the Event

In this highly‐anticipated concert, hear the mellifluous sounds of classical music by Bartók, Lutoslawski and Mieczysław Karłowicz at Berlin's treasured and world‐renowned Konzerthaus.

In 2013, the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra was founded in the Polish port city of Szczecin, formerly Szczecin, in memory of the distinguished composer Witold Lutosławski on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. The composer's work is therefore given special attention in this summer academy, which welcomes students from Poland and across Europe to Szczecin — this year with his stirring Cello Concerto, performed by 2007 Lutosławski Prize winner Marcin Zdunik. The concert, which marks the first time the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra has performed at a Young Euro Classic, begins with another Polish composer who is very little known in Germany, Mieczysław Karłowicz. The melodic orchestral overture Bianca da Molena was even written during his Berlin period in 1900! After the interval, the orchestra, led by Azerbaijani conductor Ayyub Guliyev, took up the challenge of Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra. Created as the last major work by the composer who emigrated to the USA, it gives, as the name suggests, the various orchestral groups an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents.

  • Mieczysław Karłowicz – „Bianca da molena” op. 6 (1900)
  • Lutoslawski, Witold – Violoncello‐Konzert (1970)
  • Bartók, Béla – Konzert für Orchester Sz. 116 (1943‐44)
