About the Event

As an introduction to this year’s festival edition, the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra and its chief conductor Kent Nagano offer a musically diverse concert evening in keeping with the festival motto, »BLACKANDWHITE«.
The orchestra from Dresden’s partner city performs Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, a work that still stands slightly in the shadow of its titanic sisters Nos. 7 and 9, yet enchants the listener with originality and humour. The second half of the concert features a new work by the American composer Sean Shepherd, setting texts by the German master poet Ulla Hahn, which will have its world premiere at New York’s Carnegie Hall on April 23, 2023, will then be performed in Hamburg and finally comes to Dresden, ready to be introduced to the Festival audience.

Program

  • Beethoven, Ludwig van – Symphony no. 8, in F major, op. 93
  • Shepherd, Sean – New Composition for Cello, Youth Chorus and Orchestra (Commissioned jointly by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra and the Dresden Music Festival)
Program is subject to change

Artists

Choir: Dresdner Kreuzchor

The history of the Dresdner Kreuzchor (Choir of the Church of the Holy Cross) spans well over seven hundred years. Founded as a Latin grammar school at the “capella sanctae crucis”, today known as the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross), the choir has been instrumental in preserving to the present day the medieval tradition of choral liturgy sung by boys' choirs. Being the oldest artistic institution still to be funded by the city, the choir is an essential part of the city's identity.

Conductor: Nagano, Kent

Kent Nagano has established a reputation as a gifted interpreter of both the operatic and symphonic repertoire. He is officially the eighth music director of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and the 2008‐2009 season is his third with the orchestra in that capacity. In September 2006, Mr. Nagano also took over from Zubin Mehta as General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

Born in California, was Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra since 1978, and concluded his tenure there in May 2009. He will assume the title of Conductor Laureate, in addition to continuing his relationship with the organization as Artistic Director of the Berkeley Akademie, a new program dedicated to repertoire for small orchestra. Kent Nagano’s early professional years were spent in Boston, working in the opera house and as assistant conductor to Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
A new and important phase of Mr. Nagano’s career opened when he became Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie‐Orchester Berlin in 2000. In June 2006, at the end of his tenure with the orchestra, he was given the title “Honorary Conductor” by members of the orchestra, only the second recipient of this honour in their 60‐year history.

Kent Nagano became the first Music Director of Los Angeles Opera in 2003, having already held the position of Principal Conductor for two years.  As a much sought‐after guest conductor, he has worked with most of the world’s finest orchestras, including the Vienna, Berlin and New York Philharmonic Orchestras and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He has recorded for Erato, Teldec, Pentatone and Deutsche Grammophon as well as Harmonia Mundi, winning Grammy awards for his recordings of Busoni’s Doktor Faust with the Opéra National de Lyon, and Peter and the Wolf with the Russian National Orchestra.

Soloist: Vogler, Jan

At the young age of twenty Jan Vogler started as principal cellist of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden but has for the last twenty years been fully concentrating on his already successful career as a soloist. Considered to be one of the finest German violoncellists, he has been ardently expanding the spectrum of his cello sound.

Orchestra: Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg
Choir: Hamburger Alsterspatzen (Kinder‐ und Jugendchor der Hamburgischen Staatsoper),
Ensemble: The Young ClassX
