About the Event
Consider the enduring charms of vice, and the the rewards of virtue as acclaimed director Graham Vick creates a new production of Stravinsky's 'The Rake's Progress' at the Opera di Roma.
Chen Reiss, Juan Francisco Gatell, and Markus Werba lead a stellar cast in this tale of a young man lead astray in the big city. Nick Shadow takes young Tom Rakewell on a tour of vice and depravity, and it is up to true love, in the form of Tom's village sweetheart, to save the young man's soul.
Inspired by the 18th Century excesses depicted in Hogarth's pictures of the same name, Stravinsky's neo-classical style and Auden's satirical libretto combine to evoke the past, with a very modern twist to remind audiences of the timeless battle between purity of heart and hedonistic enjoyment.
Sung in English with Italian and English surtitles
