About the Event

Enjoy the fascinating opera by Mozart in one of the masterpieces of Art Nouveau architecture in Barcelona, the Palau de la Música Catalana.

Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) is a singspiel (Vaudeville comic, a type of popular opera sung in German, in which spoken parts are interspersed) in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder.

It is the composer's last opera and possibly the best known and most internationally performed one. It was premiered in Vienna (Austria) in September 1791.

One of the most acclaimed operas in the world, created to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages, includes as many brilliant and famous fragments as the spectacular aria of the Queen of the Night 'Die Holle Rache', of a virtuosity and inspiration as few others.

A beautiful concert hall though of course more suited to concerts than opera, both for stage limitations and the seating which is not really sloped, so views are not perfect. Many would criticise that there were no surtitles; I expect this was announced but we simply assume there will be. However the story is such a simple one that it is reasonable enough to manage without. The Queen of Night’s performance was salutary and I much enjoyed listening to such difficult arias sung pretty well. I also enjoyed the fact that somehow the performance managed to preserve some of the Masonic spiritual elements without totally occluding them in pantomime or ‘modernism’. I came to Barcelona especially to see the performance and was not disappointed. As a side‐note, could I recommend (for anyone wanting to understand a little more about Mozart) the excellent documentary by Seventh‐Arts. It’s in the Black Friday sale just now and better than most treatments of the subject. Kind regards, and thank you to all who put their hearts into this performance.
